Entry from: Te Anau, New Zealand Entry Title: "Sights and 'Sounds'" Entry: "Te Anau is on the opposite coast to Dunedin, situated right on Fiordland National Park. A lovely drive through the alpine landscape took us to the peaceful lakeside village which was to be our base for exploring the national park over the next few days. The area is famous hiking country and is the starting place for the Milford, Kepler and Routeburn tracks which are all multi-day hikes over the mountains with overnight huts along the way. The Te Anau lake is the largest in the South Island and the second largest in New Zealand behind Lake Taupo. The village itself gives beautiful views over the lake and to the Murchison mountains and Mount Luxmore behind. After enjoying the heated shower block at the campsite we left early in the morning for a days hiking along part of the Kepler track which starts at the bottom of Lake Te Anau. The path follows the lake before heading into deep forest and climbing to the top of Mount Luxmore and to a height of 1472m. It was a really steep climb in parts and hard work walking through the mist and dark forest that only cleared very close to the top - 3 1/2 hours and 15 kms after we started.
